Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
What is Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)?
PBS is all about helping you live a happier, safer, and more independent life.
It does this by:
-
Figuring out what’s already working well for you—like your daily routine, friendships, and the things you're good at
-
Looking at any behaviours that might be tricky or getting in the way—and understanding why they happen
-
Finding better, more positive ways to deal with stuff and meet your needs
-
Helping you learn new skills and behaviours that can help you meet your goals
PBS isn’t about “fixing” you - it’s about supporting you to build the life you want.
What is a Positive Behaviour Support Plan (PBSP)?
A PBSP is a plan made just for you. It helps your support team understand how to help you:
-
Feel better
-
Stay safe
-
Become more independent
Your plan will:
-
Focus on your strengths, what matters to you, and what support you need
-
Suggest changes to avoid things that might trigger tough behaviours
-
Help you learn new, more helpful ways to cope or respond
-
Include safety strategies (called restrictive practices) only if they’re absolutely needed—and always with a goal to stop using them over time
-
Be regularly updated to keep up with your life and needs
Why does PBS matter?
PBS helps you feel understood, respected, and supported.
It’s about creating a life that feels safe, positive, and meaningful—on your terms.
