Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP)
What is a Behaviour Support Practitioner (BSP)?
They’re people who help you when certain behaviours are causing problems at school, home, or just everyday life - especially if you have a disability or extra support needs.
They don’t judge or punish you. Instead, they try to figure out:
-
What’s really behind the behaviour (like feeling stressed, frustrated, confused, or having needs that aren’t being met)
-
Why it’s happening
-
How to make things easier, safer, and more positive for you
What do they actually do?
-
Chat with you and the people who support you (like family or teachers)
-
Check out your strengths, challenges, and what your daily life looks like
Help make a plan to:
-
Reduce stress or tough situations
-
Teach you new skills or ways to cope
-
Help others support you better
-
Work towards stopping restrictive practices, like seclusion or restraint, if they’re being used
Why would someone see a BSP?
If you’re:
-
Getting into trouble a lot
-
Feeling misunderstood or overwhelmed
-
Having behaviours that might be unsafe for you or others
-
Or just finding it hard to be heard and get the support you need
A BSP’s goal is to help you feel more in control, understood, and respected — and to help those around you do the same.
